WCS Permits Moves 20-Ton Magnet

A 20-ton cylindrical magnet massive enough to accommodate a standing African elephant, loaded a truck for Brookhaven in New York last month.

WCS Permits obtained California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virgina, West Virgina, Maryland and Pennsylvania permits so the magnet could legally travel interstate from SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California.

With loaded dimensions of 16-5 long, 12-10 wide and 12-8 high, the magnet was loaded onto a specialized truck and began a slow journey to New York from SLAC in Menlo Park, CA.

The magnet will be used in Brookhaven, New York at Brookhaven’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), which specializes in subatomic investigations, smashing atoms and tracking the showers of fast-flying debris.
