WCS Helps Move 188-Ton Generator

WCS Permits not only obtained permits to help move a 188-ton generator and turbine skid unit, but performed the route surveys and dispatched the pilot cars to move the super loads through Alabama and Florida.

Several route surveys were conducted and the best route was considered before the states of Florida and Alabama chose the routes the loads would follow to move through each state. That decision was not made until state officials met to discuss.

The load embarked on a four-night journey Monday, leaving from Pensacola, FL — the port of Pensacola — and headed for Brewton, AL.

WCS worked with a local transport company to move the equipment along with a convoy of power, telephone, cable, city, county and state bucket trucks and police escorts. Because of its height and overall size, power lines and traffic signals needed to be temporarily taken down to allow the oversize load to move.

There will be intermittent traffic delays and road closures as the convoy moves along the route, and the oversize load will only move at night.

Power outages up to two hours are expected as well as intermittent traffic delays and road closures.

Georgia Pacific is installing a large steam turbine generator which will recycle the steam produced as part of Georgia Pacific’s manufacturing process and convert it to electricity to power the plant. The turbine was imported into the Port of Pensacola in late July and has been in storage at the Port ever since awaiting routing and permitting for its move to Brewton. The turbine transporter will be 18’ wide, almost 25’ tall and 173 ½’ long. The generator will be on a separate transport as part of the convoy. That trailer is 18’ wide, 18 ½’ high and 192 ½’ long.
